The effectiveness of the management of oral malodor

Abstract
Objectives.This study examined the effectiveness of the management of oral malodor on levels of volatile sulfur compounds.

Methods.Thirteen patient who have oral malodor were enrolled in this study. The amounts of volatile sulfur compounds in the mouth air were measured at baseline and each visit for treatment. The patient were divided into four groups according to the control method, such as education group, education¤ýprofessional toothbrushing group, education¤ýroot planing group and education¤ýprofessional toothbrushing¤ýroot planing group.

Results.Education¤ýroot planing group and education¤ýprofessional toothbrushing¤ýroot planing group highly decreased the amounts of hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan. And, education group and education¤ýprofessional toothbrushing group also decreased the amounts of hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan than threshold level.

Conclusions.Oral hygiene education, professional toothbrushing and root planing for the management of oral malodor can reduce the level of oral malodor.
